Harvest View Chardonnay - Bunker Hillside Vineyard 2018
Harvest View Chardonnay - Bunker Hillside Vineyard 2018
A big mouthful of Chardonnay. Deep tropical fruit with a touch of warm oak. Super complex wine. These grapes were grown high up Sonoma Mountain, from vines planted over 50 years ago.
The reason this wine is so unique, so memorable, so special? This vineyard. This wine comes from a very special old vine vineyard high up Sonoma Mountain, around 1800 foot elevation. The Bunker family planted these grapes over 50 years ago. They have carefully tended them ever since. These grapes helped some of the earliest Sonoma County wineries win acclaim. The spectacular location provides crystal clear sunlight, cooling breezes, abundant rain during winter season.
Over 20 years running Sonoma Wine Shop, we’ve met some amazing people, bought and sold their special wines, and understood the joy produced from some fantastic vineyards. We know how Bunker Hillside fruit has helped a few wineries produce some great wines over these years.
Now Harvest View has created our own first release of Bunker Hillside Chardonnay. Harvest View specializes in ‘elevage’ - carefully attending to the initial ‘made’ wine with a gentle cellar hand. Working with 2 amazing winemakers, Harvest View focused on our applying proper oak program, and just bottled this 2018 wine. We used 1 year old and neutral oak to soften the wine, imparting some deeper flavors and improving the mouth feel. We are very happy with these results.
This wine is 100% Bunker Hillside. The fruit screams tropical with notes of pineapple. Ripe but not flabby - crisp acids show through. A fresh bottling as of August 2020, the oak tannins are still a bit distinctive yet in balance. 1-2 years more in bottle and those deeper flavors will better integrate with the tropical fruit.
The body is viscous but not cloying. A ‘big chard’ style, the character of the vineyard is unmistakably rare in a more homogenized Chardonnay world. Bunker Hillside has earned it’s place in the sun.
